Breaking Cigars on Instagram: "Factory workers who couldn’t read chose a 1,200-page French novel as their inspiration. The man reading it to them changed everything. This is how Montecristo cigars were born. In 1935 at Havana’s H. Upmann factory, hundreds of Cuban workers sat rolling cigars while a man on an elevated platform read to them. This was the lector, paid from the workers’ own wages to educate and entertain them through 10-hour shifts. That year, he was reading Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo” in Spanish translation. The story captivated them completely. For months, workers followed Edmond Dantès’ journey from betrayed sailor to imprisoned innocent to wealthy count seeking revenge. They rolled faster during action scenes and slowed during romantic passages. They were living inside the narrative while their hands created art. Dumas wrote this novel in 1844 Paris for French aristocrats. He never imagined Cuban tobacco workers would become so obsessed they’d name their masterpiece after it. When Upmann needed a name for their new premium line, the workers voted unanimously for Montecristo, after the island where Dantès found his treasure and transformation. The factory owners agreed and embedded the story into the brand itself. The band features six crossed swords surrounding a treasure mountain with the French fleur-de-lis. Every cigar carries the novel’s symbols. The lector tradition did more than entertain. It created the most politically and culturally aware working class in Cuba. Workers who couldn’t read became experts in literature, philosophy, and current events through their ears. They turned a French revenge fantasy into Cuban reality, creating what would become Cuba’s most prestigious cigar brand. Today Montecristo stands as Cuba’s most famous export after rum.
